What this course covers

Florida requires 14 hours of continuing education every two years to keep a sales associate or broker license active. This course covers the full requirement in one place, including the subjects the state specifies rather than only the total.

Core Law

The state-mandated Core Law hours, covering changes to Florida real estate law and rule, recent Commission decisions, and the areas where licensees most commonly fall foul of the regulations. This portion is required and cannot be substituted with other subjects.

Ethics and business practices

The required ethics content, covering professional conduct, obligations to clients and customers, and the practical situations where the ethical answer and the profitable one differ.

Specialty content

The remaining hours cover subjects with direct application to daily practice: disclosure obligations, contract handling, fair housing in current practice, and market conditions.

Why the subjects matter as much as the hours

Florida specifies which subjects your 14 hours must include, not just how many hours you complete. A package that adds up to 14 hours but omits the required Core Law content will not satisfy your renewal, and the state will tell you so at the point you try to renew.

Buying hours from wherever is cheapest is the most common way agents find themselves short at the deadline. This course is structured to satisfy the full requirement so that does not happen.

Reporting and deadlines

We report your completion to the DBPR within five business days. Because reporting takes a few days, finishing in the final week of your renewal cycle is tighter than it looks.

Check your renewal date in your DBPR account rather than relying on memory. Renewal cycles vary depending on when you were first licensed. VERIFY the specific dates before publishing this page.

How the course works

Fully online and self-paced. Start immediately, study across as many sessions as you like, and your progress is saved as you go. Florida requires the full 14 hours, so the course tracks your time.

Frequently asked questions

Who is required to take the Florida 14-Hour Continuing Education (CE) course?

All active and voluntarily inactive Florida real estate sales associates and brokers must complete 14 hours of continuing education every two years. This recurring requirement applies to all license renewal cycles after your initial post-licensing renewal.

What is the exact breakdown of the Florida 14-Hour CE requirement?

To satisfy the Florida Real Estate Commission (FREC) and DBPR requirements, your 14 hours of continuing education must be broken down into three specific categories:

  • 3 Hours of Core Law: Covering license law updates, escrow, and agency relationships.

  • 3 Hours of Ethics and Business Practices: Covering professional conduct, fair housing, and business duties.

  • 8 Hours of Specialty Credits: Covering approved electives like property management, finance, or contracts.

Do I need to take the 14-Hour CE course for my very first license renewal?

No. First-renewal licensees do not take the 14-hour CE course. For your first renewal cycle, sales associates must complete a 45-hour post-licensing course, and brokers must complete a 60-hour post-licensing course. The 14-hour CE requirement begins on your second renewal and continues every two years thereafter.

When is the deadline to complete my 14-Hour Real Estate CE course?

Your continuing education must be completed, and your renewal fees paid, before your license expiration date. In Florida, real estate licenses expire every two years on either March 31 or September 30 at midnight Eastern Standard Time.

What happens if I miss the deadline for my 14-Hour Continuing Education?

If you fail to complete your 14 hours by the expiration date, your license status will automatically change to involuntary inactive.

  • If your license is involuntary inactive for less than 12 months, you can reactivate it by completing the standard 14-hour CE course and paying a late fee.

  • If your license is involuntary inactive for 12 to 24 months, you must complete a special 28-hour reactivation course.

  • After 24 months, the license becomes null and void.

Are there any exemptions to the Florida 14-Hour CE requirement?

Yes. Members of the Florida Bar in active and good standing are exempt from the 14-hour continuing education requirement. However, you must explicitly notify the DBPR of your Florida Bar status to claim this exemption. (Note: The 4-year real estate degree exemption applies to post-licensing, but not to the recurring 14-hour CE).

Can I take the 14-Hour CE course entirely online at my own pace?

Yes. The DBPR fully approves distance learning, meaning you can complete your 14-hour CE requirement through an online, self-paced course. This format allows you to log in on your own schedule, read the required materials, and pass the required end-of-course assessment without stepping into a classroom.

Is there a final exam for the online 14-Hour CE course?

Yes. Florida state regulations dictate that distance-learning CE courses must include an end-of-course exam to verify participation and comprehension. The exam is typically a 30-question multiple-choice test (or a 10-question exam for specific modular breakdowns), and you must pass it to earn your completion certificate.

Do I need to manually send my 14-Hour CE completion certificate to the DBPR?

No. When you complete an approved online 14-hour CE course, your real estate school is responsible for electronically reporting your course completion directly to the DBPR. However, it is important to verify the completion in the DBPR website. The DBPR also recommends keeping your completion certificates and letters on file just in case there is a transmission error.

What kind of topics are covered in the 8 hours of Specialty Credits?

The 8-hour specialty education component is designed to keep you updated on current market practices. FREC-approved specialty topics frequently include property management, real estate financing (ECOA, TILA, TRID), technology, risk management, contracts, and handling Condo/HOA disclosures.
